“Die!”
The one at the front charged at Sion.
He first threw a pair of garden shears he was holding, then quickly drew his sword.
Sion dodged the flying shears by ducking low and clashed with the attacker.
Clang!
Their swords collided with a sharp sound slicing through the air.
Immediately, another enemy swung his axe from the side. With a heavy sound, the axe slashed through the air where Sion had just been.
Sion stepped back and faced the two assassins again. Then he muttered as if surprised.
“…They’re not just some random thugs.”
They seemed more troublesome than expected.
I, who had been clinging flatly to Sion’s shoulder, straightened up and said.
“Hmph, looks like it’s my turn now.”
I pointed my hand toward the tougher-looking one of the two and was just about to activate my fangirl skill when—
“Die, you bastard!”
Another one attacked from behind.
Sion swiftly turned his body and blocked the attack.
Clang!
“Eek.”
I barely managed to cling to Sion’s shoulder, dangling like a rag.
‘Too fast!’
The situation moved so quickly it was dizzying just trying to keep up.
Clang! Clang clang!
While I hesitated, unable to find the right moment to jump in—
The rest of the enemies joined the fight.
‘Ganging up? Cowards!’
I quickly fired off my skill like a machine gun.
“<Unstoppable Devotion>!”
In my haste, I bit the tip of my tongue slightly, but the situation was too urgent to feel any pain.
Fwoosh—!
A heart-shaped projectile shot from my hand and zoomed toward the forehead of one of the assassins. Startled by the sudden, strange form, the enemy panicked.
“What the—?!”
Whack—!
The heart hit him square in the forehead, and he rolled his eyes back and collapsed instantly.
Seeing their comrade suddenly drop, the last standing assassin hesitated.
“W-What the hell…?!”
I mumbled toward him.
“What do you think? He got hit and passed out.”
At that moment, the leader, still fiercely exchanging blows with Sion, shouted angrily at his subordinate.
“What are you dawdling for?!”
“B-But boss! Something’s weird!”
“Stop with the nonsense and attack! We don’t have time!”
“Tch…!”
If the fight dragged on, the royal guards in the annex would notice the disturbance and come rushing in—making the situation unfavorable for the attackers.
‘If I’d known this would happen, I should’ve brought Garen too.’
The fact that those extra assassin goons were actually skilled fighters caught me off guard.
Originally, I had planned to quietly handle the situation myself and then focus on Sion’s dramatic reunion with Genevia—so I had let my guard down a bit.
‘But it’s fine. Once those last two are dealt with, it’s over.’
Honestly, judging by how things were going, it seemed Sion could handle everything on his own even without my help.
Then suddenly, a thought crossed my mind.
‘Huh? But in the original story, why did Sion get injured again?’
Just then—
The assassins suddenly regrouped and exchanged meaningful glances with each other.
A sense of dread crept over me.
Moments later, they pulled something out from their clothes, gripped it tightly, and charged all at once from all directions.
‘What now?’
Sion slashed one of them through the side as he broke through the front line. The man crumpled to the ground with a death cry.
That’s when something rolled out of the fallen man’s hand—a small black orb, about the size of a ping-pong ball.
“Huh? What’s that?”
Crack.
Fsshhhhh…
The black orb cracked under impact, and a strange purple liquid oozed out from inside. The moment it touched the ground, the surrounding snow instantly melted away into a blackened, bubbling mess.
“…!”
I quickly whispered to Sion:
“Sion, be careful! They’re using some kind of dangerous poison!”
At that, Sion’s eyes grew sharper with focus.
The last remaining assassin, who appeared to be their leader, clenched his teeth as he looked at his fallen subordinates.
“Useless trash…”
Then he sneered at Sion and asked arrogantly.
“Young Lord, what kind of cowardly sorcery have you been using all this time?”
Sion calmly replied.
“Pretty bold of someone sneaking in under the cover of night to say that.”*
The assassin twisted his face in anger. Then, with a twisted, mocking smile, he said.
“Heh… Let’s see how long you can keep up that smug look.”
He pulled out more of those black poison orbs and placed them between his fingers, readying them like throwing knives.
A moment later, he rushed at us and hurled the orbs all at once.
“Die, Young Lord!”
I quickly stepped forward, summoned all my energy, and released it in one massive burst.
“You die! <Unstoppable Devotion Attack>!!!”
From my hand, a barrage of tiny hearts—far more than the number of black orbs he had thrown—exploded out like rapid fire.
The hearts clashed in midair with the orbs, bursting like colorful fireworks.
Pop! Bang! Crack!
“Wh-What the hell!?”
The assassin’s face twisted in confusion. He quickly reached into his clothes for more.
Just then, Sion called out to me sharply.
“Lin, hold on tight!”
“…!”
At the same moment, Sion’s entire body was enveloped in a powerful surge of aura.
Using aura causes a great deal of physical and mental strain, so it seemed he had saved it for this last, decisive strike.
Dash—!
In a flash, Sion leapt forward in a single bound and landed right in front of the enemy.
The assassin’s face twisted in horror and despair at the sight.
“Y-You monster…!”
Slice—.
The man fell dead where he stood.
I looked over the fallen enemies once more and let out a breath of relief.
“…I-Is it finally over?”
Sion casually flipped one of the assassin’s bodies over with his foot and examined the black orbs they had been carrying.
“…These aren’t from the North. Must’ve been hired from another region.”
“Looks that way.”
I scanned the area around us quickly.
‘Okay, the assassins are dealt with… Now I need to find Genevia.’
Just then—
Out of the corner of my eye, I saw something move in the darkness.
“…Huh?”
It was a human silhouette.
The fourth assassin—who had been hiding.
“…!!!”
My instincts screamed.
This was it. This was the moment in the original story when Sion got injured.
And sure enough, the man hurled a black orb directly at Sion.
“Sion, watch out!!!”
I moved without thinking.
I tried to activate my fangirl skill again, but I had already drained all my energy—it wasn’t working.
‘I have to stop it—somehow!’
There was only one option left.
I threw myself forward—meeting the incoming orb head-on in midair.
Wham—! Crack!
The moment the orb hit, a blinding flash exploded before my eyes—and then, a searing pain swept over my entire body like I’d been thrown into fire.
I crashed straight into the snow.
“Lin…!”
Sion urgently caught my limp body in his arms. His face, as he checked my condition, hardened into something terrifying.
“…Sion……”
Even in this life, I had never felt such a brutal, mind-numbing pain. I gasped for breath.
“…It hurts, Sion… so much……”
“Lin, why would you do something so reckless?!”
He shouted, his voice and face completely unlike the aloof and cynical man I’d always known.
Gone was the usual cold indifference. What I saw now was a mix of anger and heartbreak.
A terrifying thought crossed my mind—this might be our last conversation.
I started giving what felt like a dying declaration.
“Sion… I’m sorry… In this life… you must be loved… and find happiness…”
I could feel his hands around me tremble slightly.
With what little clarity I had left, I forced my eyes to focus on his face.
‘If I’m going to die… I need to see that face at least one more time…’
As my vision began to blur and fade, Sion called out in a panic.
“Lin! Don’t lose consciousness! I’m going to get help right now…!”
He took off running with me still cradled tightly in his arms.
“Garen! Garen! Someone, anyone!!”
‘Don’t grieve too much for me, Sion… I died protecting you. I have no regrets.’
But just then—
“Huh? Knight?”
A familiar voice made Sion stop and turn around.
“You… You’re that priestess?”
“…It’s Genevia, actually.”
My eyes flew open wide.
Then I bolted upright, shouting.
“GENEVIA!”
‘That’s right—she’s here!’
“Genevia! Save me—ugh…!”
“Ms. Lin?!”
Hearing my groan, Sion rushed to Genevia and barked at her with terrifying urgency.
“Priestess! Heal her! Now!”
“What?! Wait, what happened—?!”
Genevia’s scream rang out as she caught sight of me in Sion’s arms, looking completely wrecked.
“Oh my god…!”
“Hurry! There’s no time!”
“O-Okay! But you have to put her down! I need to properly see the wounds to heal them!”
“She’s dying, can’t you see that?! Heal her just like this!”
Instead of a romantic reunion, Sion and Genevia were practically screaming at each other in chaos.
And as I watched them bicker loudly over my battered body—
I blacked out.
